Our tour will take us to Princess Street and Gardens, the Scott Monument and the fine classical buildings of the National Gallery and the Royal Scottish Academy. Also see George Street and the many fine squares and gardens. The focus of our tour will be the historic Royal Mile, a fine street lined with tall 17th Century houses. The Mile stretches from the castle to Hollyrood. Enjoy dinner together this evening. Overnight in Edinburgh. MacDonald Roxburghe Hotel, www.macdonaldhotels.co.uk/roxburghe (B,D)

Day 4            Saturday, 24 March, Edinburgh/Airth:
This morning will be at leisure to enjoy this lovely city in your own way. Early this afternoon we drive out of Edinburgh into the heather-clad moorlands of the Scottish countryside. We will the dramatic Wallace Monument, positioned on the ‘crossroads of Scotland’ at the historic scene of the battles such as Stirling Bridge and Bannockburn. Here we will sense the presence of Scotland’s heroes – William Wallace, known as ‘Braveheart’ and Robert the Bruce. We visit the historic town of Stirling, witness for over 800 years to Scotland’s most turbulent and poignant historic moments and visit the historic Stirling Castle. We continue then to our dinner and overnight at
Airth Castle Hotel & Spa Resort. www.airthcastlehotel.com (B,D)

Day 5            Sunday, 25 March, Airth/Inverness: Today we leave Airth and make our way to the ancient university town of St Andrews. We have a tour of the town with our guides including the university and St Crathie’s church. We continue our spectacular journey towards the highlands journeying through the dramatic scenery of the Grampian Mountains. Before we arrive into Inverness we visit  Culloden Moor, scene of the last pitched battle in Britain, which is one of the most iconic and emotive sites in Scotland. The battle effectively ended Jacobite hopes of restoring the exiled Stuart dynasty to the throne of Britain. It was here on 16 April 1746 that the army of Prince Charles Edward Stuart was crushed by the Government forces led by the Duke of Cumberland. In less than an hour, the time it takes to walk round the battlefield, it was over. The harsh and brutal measures introduced after the battle signaled the end of the distinctive way of life and culture of the Highland people of Scotland. Today Culloden remains one of the most haunting and poignant locations in Britain. Walk the battlefield where the Memorials and Clan graves lie and reflect on the human cost of 'One man’s dream'. Continue to Inverness for the next two nights. Overnight in the heart of Inverness. The Columba Hotel, Inverness, http://columba-inverness.hotel-rv.com (B)

Day 6            Monday, 26 March, Inverness (Isle of Skye): Today we tour to the Isle of Skye, which is the most scenically spectacular island of the western seaboard with glorious mountain landscapes. Parts of Skye are wild and lonely and its Cullins Mountains are the barest, most precipitous and most impressive in Britain. The coasts, broken by sea lochs, and often strange cliff and rock formations create exciting scenery. The island has witnessed clan battles, the extremes of feast and famine and the profound social, political and economic changes through which the Western Highlands and Islands have passed. We return to Inverness for overnight and dinner at our hotel. (B,D)

Day 7            Tuesday, 27 March, Inverness /Glasgow: Today we leave Inverness and journey southwards again to  Loch Ness. Loch Ness is probably the best-known Scottish loch, thanks to its famous resident - Nessie, the exceedingly friendly, though unfortunately extremely elusive, Loch Ness monster. We take a boat ride along the loch which stops to allow us disembark and visit Castle Urquhart , a majestic ruined castle . The castle was blown up in 1692 to prevent it falling into Jacobite hands; what's left is a classic romantic ruin jutting out into the loch. Loch Ness is 23 miles long and very, very deep - there's plenty of room for a monster. We continue to Oban where will see how the highland dew is distilled at a whisky distillery. We continue to the Glasgow area for the night. Jury’s Inn, http://glasgowhotels.jurysinns.com  (B)

Day 8            Wednesday, 28 March, Departure: This morning we transfer to Glasgow airport for departure. Our group flight, with a stopover in London, gets us into Chicago this afternoon. (B)
